Projects
Turnkey PCB Assembly for Telraam
Client: Telraam, Belgium
Industry: Smart Cities and Urban Mobility
Technologies and processes we used during this project: turnkey PCB assembly including SMD assembly, box building, functional testing, packaging, and logistics
Summary
The cooperation involved assembling and testing over 2,500 and more PCB units for Telraam’s traffic monitoring sensors, which are now actively deployed worldwide. These devices, featuring AI and mobile data capabilities, have significantly contributed to gathering critical traffic data, aiding local authorities in optimising traffic management and urban planning.
About our Client
Telraam is a qualified and objective citizen science service provider enabling private citizens, companies, organisations, and local authorities to generate traffic counting data using an AI sensor and open-source software. They maintain and develop the Telraam-sensor and platform where all data is published as open data.
Telraam is the brainchild of Transport & Mobility Leuven, a Belgian transport policy research company, Mobiel 21, an NGO focusing on citizen engagement and Waanz.in, a digital studio. The original project started in 2019 as a collaboration between the abovementioned partners. As of January 2021, the development and maintenance of Telraam is managed by a new joint venture: Rear Window BV.
PCB Assembly Service
Telraam came to us seeking turnkey PCB assembly for their traffic counting solution, and we successfully delivered it through our comprehensive manufacturing service. Our team handled building and testing the circuit boards essential for the Telraam sensors. Throughout the cooperation, we have successfully delivered over 2,500 devices, each ready to be installed to collect vital traffic data.
The Telraam S2 device, the latest in their product line, features a low-resolution camera, an AI chip for detecting and categorising street users, and a built-in mobile data connection. These devices provide anonymized, aggregate data per traffic mode and direction with a 15-minute resolution. The data collected is shared with local authorities and policymakers as open data, facilitating informed traffic management and urban planning decisions.
Key Outcomes for Telraam
By delivering over 2,500 ready-to-install devices, we have helped create a robust network of traffic sensors that are now operational in various locations worldwide like San Francisco, Berlin, Utrecht, Leuven, Brussels, Antwerp, Dublin, Lille, Helsinki and many others. These sensors have provided millions of hours of traffic counts, offering valuable insights into local traffic patterns.
Telraam’s sensors have proven to be a game-changer in traffic data collection, combining technology and citizen participation to address the complex mobility demands of cities and towns. The data collected has helped local authorities and mobility professionals design more efficient and effective infrastructure and traffic management plans. Moreover, the involvement of citizens in data collection fosters a sense of community and engagement, leading to more sustainable and accepted traffic solutions.
