Summary
Byte Lab designed and built a complete UI module, hardware and software, for Versuni’s connected coffee appliance. The result is a 60 FPS touchscreen interface supporting 25+ languages and over 50 pre-set coffee recipes, all connected via Wi-Fi and controllable through the Philips HomeID mobile app.
With AWS-backed cloud infrastructure and over-the-air (OTA) update support, the product continues to improve after it leaves the factory. It is now in mass production, reaching high-volume output.

Software and Hardware development for Connected Coffee Appliance
Modern IoT appliances have to do two things well simultaneously: perform reliably as embedded systems and feel effortless to use. For a connected coffee machine, that means smooth touchscreen interaction, stable Wi-Fi connectivity, seamless integration with a mobile app, and a production process that scales without quality trade-offs.
Versuni needed a partner who could own the entire UI module, from hardware design to firmware, graphics performance to cloud connectivity, and help make critical technical decisions along the way.
Byte Lab developed the full UI module from the ground up, taking responsibility for both hardware and software.
At the core of the system sits an STM32 microcontroller, handling application logic and the TouchGFX-based graphical interface. An ESP32 module manages Wi-Fi connectivity, bridging the device with the cloud and the user’s smartphone.
We worked closely with Versuni’s UI/UX team to push graphics performance to its limits on a real-time embedded system achieving fluid animations and consistent 60 FPS responsiveness that users actually notice.
On the connectivity side, we collaborated with the mobile app team to define a reliable communication protocol. This enabled three key connected features:
- Remote power control – turn the machine on before you get out of bed
- Mobile brewing – start a coffee from your phone
- User profile management – personalized settings synced across sessions
All of this runs on AWS Cloud infrastructure, which also handles OTA firmware updates meaning the product can be improved and extended long after it ships.
We also built production testing tools directly into the UI module, simplifying hardware validation during manufacturing, and ensuring every unit meets quality standards before leaving the line.
Throughout the project, Byte Lab operated as both a development team and a consulting partner, helping shape architecture decisions, not just executing them.


Key Outcomes for Versuni
The developed coffee appliance was launched successfully and received strong user feedback. It is now shipping in high volumes, a level of production that speaks to both product reliability and real market demand.
Following this collaboration, Versuni and Byte Lab continue working together on innovative home appliances.
